Sarnia - Karl Mackie Remote Control Car Race |
When Tim Mackie's father died from lung cancer seven years ago, the 32-year-old Sarnia man knew he had to do something. "I kind of felt helpless, you know, after he died," said Mackie. He and his father Karl were avid RC (remote control) car racers. From that passion, the Karl Mackie Memorial Race Against Cancer was born in 2002. "Basically from there every year it's doubled in size," Tim Mackie said. In 2011 about 100 racers raised more than $3,500. With 85 entries so far, Mackie expects to raise roughly the same amount this year. Since it began the race has raised $13,800. After four years held at a local church, the race has been moved to DeGroot's Nurseries. The whole event is a family affair with two of the Mackie's children race. Homemade chili is available for participants. The race has been included this year as the first stop in a four-race circuit called the Southwestern Ontario Shootout. |
